(PAPER) BINUS Equity Research Competition

I had the opportunity to participate in Stock Quest, a national-scale Equity Research Competition organized by the Bina Nusantara Finance Club (BNFC) in collaboration with BINUS University’s Finance Program. The competition aimed to foster students’ analytical skills in evaluating publicly listed companies by producing comprehensive research reports and delivering well-grounded investment recommendations. With the theme "Building a Sustainable Portfolio for Better Tomorrow," the competition highlighted the importance of sustainable investing through the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors.

  • Purpose of Participation: I joined this competition to express my long-standing interest in the capital market and to deepen my analytical skills in stock analysis and investment instruments.
  • Team Role: I was in charge of the ESG analysis, financial statement evaluation, and technical analysis for our research paper.

During the competition, I conducted an in-depth ESG analysis by evaluating the company’s environmental initiatives, social responsibility programs, and governance structure. This allowed me to understand how sustainability practices can influence a company’s long-term value and investment appeal.

  • Key Contribution: Identified ESG-related risks and opportunities and linked them to the company's financial and market performance.
  • Learning Outcome: Gained hands-on experience on how ESG factors are incorporated into equity valuation models and investment decision-making processes.

On the financial side, I performed a comprehensive financial analysis, including ratio analysis, income statement and balance sheet assessments, as well as trend and peer comparisons. I also conducted a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) valuation to derive the intrinsic value of the company’s stock.

  • Tools and Techniques Used: DCF Model, Relative Valuation, Ratio Analysis.
  • Result: Presented a data-driven investment recommendation supported by both qualitative insights and quantitative calculations.

This experience taught me how to approach equity research from a holistic perspective, balancing financial performance with sustainability considerations. It also strengthened my teamwork, presentation, and research writing abilities.

  • Final Takeaway: The competition solidified my passion for the field of investment analysis and reaffirmed my desire to pursue a career in equity research and portfolio management. It also gave me a clearer understanding of the growing importance of ESG in the financial industry today.
