(PAPER) KSPM FEB UPN Equity Research Competition

Participating in the Vetra Stock Competition (VSC) 2024 marked a significant milestone in my journey toward becoming a proficient investment analyst. Held to commemorate the 7th anniversary of KSPM FEB UPNVJ, this national-level equity research competition was designed to enhance university students’ understanding of capital markets and responsible investing through the lens of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

  • First Exposure: This was my first equity research competition, and it provided an excellent entry point to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world analytical setting.
  • Theme and Purpose: The competition focused on encouraging ESG-aligned investment thinking while deepening participants' grasp of stock market mechanisms and company analysis.

In this project, I took on the responsibility of conducting Technical Analysis and performing Porter’s Five Forces Analysis to evaluate the target company’s market position and competitive dynamics. Through Technical Analysis, I studied the company’s historical stock price patterns, moving averages, and key momentum indicators to derive insights into entry/exit signals and price behavior over time.

  • Key Contribution: Analyzed price charts using tools such as RSI, MACD, and trendline breakouts to support our team’s investment timing and confidence in our recommendation.
  • Learning Outcome: Gained practical experience in interpreting technical indicators and linking them with broader market sentiment.

Meanwhile, through the application of Porter’s Five Forces, I assessed the industry attractiveness and strategic positioning of the company by examining the bargaining power of suppliers and buyers, the threat of new entrants and substitutes, and competitive rivalry. This helped us gain a well-rounded view of the company's external environment, market threats, and strategic resilience.

  • Strategic Analysis Tool: Porter’s Framework allowed us to identify external pressures and structural risks that could affect long-term profitability.
  • Result: Enabled the team to articulate potential risk areas that might not be visible through financial ratios alone.

Although our team did not win the competition, the experience was invaluable. It gave me a realistic view of the standard of competition in the investment analysis space and sharpened my ability to communicate findings through a structured yet simple equity research paper. I also gained a deeper appreciation for teamwork, research rigor, and the role of ESG in modern investment decisions.

  • Final Reflection: This competition laid the foundation for my continued passion in equity research. It taught me that the learning process especially in early-stage opportunities is just as crucial as the results.

  • Next Steps: I am motivated to further strengthen my technical and strategic analysis skills and pursue more advanced competitions with a deeper understanding of capital market tools.
